Most Common Diseases of the Yorkshire Terrier

If we want to take good care of our pet, we need to know which diseases are most common in Yorkshire Terriers. Some illnesses affect all dog breeds, but others are more specific to our Yorkie. Let’s get to know them!

⚠️ IMPORTANT: This is only a general guide to Yorkshire Terrier diseases. If your Yorkie shows any symptoms, always consult your trusted veterinarian.

Common Diseases in Yorkies

There are several illnesses that can more frequently affect our loyal friends. We describe some of the most common ones below. Many of these diseases affect all dog breeds, but some are statistically more common in Yorkshire Terriers, including:

Canine Entropion

This is an eye malformation where the eyelid folds inward, causing the eyelashes to rub against the eye. This irritation can lead to redness and may even cause a corneal ulcer.

Retinal Dysplasia

This condition causes folds on the outer retina. It can be congenital or caused by parvovirus, radiation exposure, or toxins. It may lead to visual impairment or even blindness.

Tracheal Collapse

This disease causes the tracheal rings to weaken, flattening the trachea.
A clear symptom is a dry cough after eating, drinking, or exercise.

To prevent or reduce its severity, follow these tips:

  • Keep your dog at a healthy weight
  • Avoid exposure to irritants like tobacco smoke
  • Use a harness instead of a collar

Portosystemic Shunt

This condition can cause brain toxicity because blood bypasses the liver and isn’t properly filtered. It mostly affects puppies.

Possible symptoms include:

  • Lethargy
  • Depression
  • Loss of appetite
  • Seizures

Patellar Luxation

This is a displacement of the kneecap due to malformation or trauma.
If your Yorkie seems to hop or skip steps, you should consult your vet for diagnosis, as untreated cases can cause limping.

Other Diseases of the Yorkshire Terrier

There are other illnesses that can affect your Yorkie that you should also know about:

Hydrocephalus

This is an excess of cerebrospinal fluid in the brain, causing abnormal behavior in your dog. Early diagnosis is very important, as well as following your veterinarian’s advice.

Alopecia

Yorkies may suffer from uneven hair growth and hair loss. Consult your vet for the best treatment, which could include a diet rich in vitamin A, medications, or antibiotics, depending on the severity.

Progressive Retinal Atrophy

The retina gradually loses its ability to capture light, causing your Yorkie to slowly lose vision. This degenerative disease requires early diagnosis to help slow its progression.

Cataracts

Another eye condition, often related to age, where the lens becomes cloudy.
A simple way to check is to look at your dog’s eyes—if you can’t see the pupils clearly, take your dog to the vet.

Dry Eye (Keratoconjunctivitis Sicca)

Caused by insufficient tear production, leading to irritation, ulcers, yellowish-green discharge, scarring, or blindness. Your vet is your best ally for diagnosis and treatment.

Congenital Hypotrichosis

Affects the skin, causing hair loss due to a lack of hair follicles. It may also affect teeth and sweat glands.

Urolithiasis

This is the presence of stones in the urinary tract, causing irritation, colic, or bleeding. It can be related to diets high in proteins and minerals but low in fiber.

Symptoms include:

  • Loss of appetite
  • Increased thirst
  • Vomiting
  • Frequent but scant urination

If you notice any of these, visit your vet for accurate diagnosis and treatment advice.

Legg-Calvé-Perthes Disease

A degenerative condition affecting the femur, causing limping and pain. Treatment often involves hip replacement surgery, so keep a close eye on your friend.

Gender-Specific Conditions in Yorkshire Terriers

Some diseases affect males or females specifically:

Cryptorchidism

Also called undescended testicles, it occurs only in males. One testicle fails to descend into the scrotal sac and remains in the abdomen, which can increase temperature, potentially causing tumors or fertility issues.
Detectable after 6 months of age, and the usual treatment is neutering.

Patent Ductus Arteriosus (PDA)

More common in females, this heart defect affects blood circulation and can cause fatal heart failure if not treated within minutes after birth.

Syndromes That Yorkies May Develop

There are a couple of syndromes common to Yorkshire Terriers:

Cushing’s Syndrome

An endocrine disorder caused by excess cortisol. Symptoms develop slowly and include:

  • Increased urination
  • Increased thirst
  • Increased appetite
  • Panting even at rest
  • Weight loss
  • Hair loss
  • Poor wound healing
  • Behavioral changes

Often related to tumors or overuse of corticosteroids. Treatment may be medication or tumor removal if possible.

Shaker Syndrome

Characterized by full-body tremors caused by cerebellar inflammation. Unlike anxiety or cold shivers, these tremors worsen with movement.
Consult your vet for treatment, which usually involves medication.

Now you know some of the most common diseases that can affect your little Yorkshire Terrier companion. Stay alert, and if you notice any symptoms, always consult your trusted veterinarian to prevent worsening of any illness. Take good care of your Yorkie!

⚠️ REMEMBER: You can help your Yorkshire Terrier with proper nutrition and appropriate care. If in doubt, always consult your trusted veterinarian.
