Temperament of the Yorkshire Terrier

The Yorkshire Terrier, a friendly and easy to keep small breed dog, who doesn’t want one of these adorable little dogs as a companion?
Let’s find out more about their character and other important tidbits.

What is the temperament of Yorkies like?

The Yorkshire personality - what is the Yorkie like? What is the temperament of the Yorkie like?

The Yorkshire stands out, among other things, for its intelligence, for being always alert and for being a very lively dog, making them excellent to live with any kind of person and in any environment.

Our Yorkshire will love any kind of game, which makes it essential for them to play. Throw them a ball, play with a rope, or any object they like, such as a cuddly toy. Whatever you play with them, they will thank you for it.
His playful attitude and outgoing personality make him the ideal dog for anyone, young or old. Although they are very friendly with children, we must also be careful, as children often think that a dog is a toy, and we know that this is not the case.

Living with a Yorkshire Terrier

Our little friends have no problem living with us, being a trusting and affectionate animal with anyone. And thanks to their good humour, we won’t have any problem sharing time with them either.

Yorkshire dogs are very fond of their owners and interact perfectly with other dogs thanks to their easy-going and generous character. Although we always have to be careful with other bigger dogs, because as ours is smaller, they can hurt them unintentionally while they are playing.

To bear in mind about our Yorsay:

Yorkshires are very intelligent dogs.

Yorsays are very ‘lively’ and active small dogs. They tend to be very alert at all times.

The Yorkie is a very affectionate dog. He adapts to children and adults without problems.

The Yorkshire as a protector of the home

Is this little dog going to protect my house? Of course!… Yorkshire dogs are also ‘big’ protective dogs. They love their owners and love to protect them.

Although it may not seem so because of its small size, the Yorkshire Terrier is very protective, both of its home and its loved ones. He is not a fearful dog, and will bring out his strong temperament when protecting what is important to him, be it the house, the garden or even the car.

Walking my Yorkshire. How many times to take my Yorsay out?

Yorkshire dogs do not need a lot of daily exercise, so it is ideal for people who spend a lot of time outside or live in a small flat. Our furry friend will be satisfied with a few simple walks around the flat, garden or yard.

Although that’s enough, he obviously won’t turn down a few walks in the park to get more exercise and socialise with other dogs.

Take him to the countryside and you’ll see how happy he’ll be digging and running around like crazy!

Yorkshires are very sociable

As we have already mentioned, these dogs get on very well with all people and with other dogs.

As for their owners, the Yorkshire knows well what time they get home, and until we arrive, our pet will not go to sleep. Give him a hug when you get home!

It is necessary to take into account, as with any other dog breed, not to spoil them too much, because in the long run it can derive in behavioural problems. Education is basic for a good coexistence.

How to care for my Yorkshire

This breed often has cataract problems or other hereditary eye problems.

They can also present a disease that will cause them a lameness, so we must visit our trusted vet to detect quickly and effectively any problem that our friend may have.

You surely already know the basic guidelines to take care of your Yorkshire: good hygiene, a diet according to its breed and weight, enough exercise to keep it healthy and fit, and take special care of its coat, so that it does not lose that lustre that suits it so well and is the envy of all. And above all, lots of love!
